"TOP ROCK BAND"
Live at Daytona Bike Week & Biketoberfest !!
Anyone partying in Buffalo, NY in the early 90’s, knew that a night on the town included seeing one of Buffalo’s top four bands: The Tweeds (formally Talas), Big Wheelie and the Hubcaps, Laughing Bandits, or Only Human. What Buffalonians weren’t aware of was that four of these great musicians were friends. With their southern rock background, they decided to jam together on their nights off and play the music they loved. With no time to practice, the band started off as just an outlet to let loose. The Bar King Spiders took off and in 1992; the members left their previous commitments focusing solely on the Bar King Spiders. The band had its share of ups and downs as many new bands do. Rob Ebling has since passed, Allen Thompson (co founder) suffered a serious bike accident forcing him to take leave, and new members came and went. Through the years, the band thrived, voted Buffalo ’s top Rock Band at the Buffalo Music Awards as well as People’s Choice Awards number one Biker Friendly band since 2005. After sharing the stage on numerous occasions with Molly Hatchet, Herman’s Hermits, Dickie Betts, Marshall Tucker, Talas and opening for Vince Neil of Motley Crue during Daytona’s Bike Week, the band continued touring across the United States . They were asked to Sturgis and played several venues at Daytona and Myrtle Beach Bike Weeks. They are a popular draw at motorcycle blessings, biker and club events, fund raisers, corporate and charity events. Bikes for Babes to Benefit the March of Dimes and the Rubin Brown Run are just a few local charity events the band has been a part of. Gary DellaNeve co founded the Bar King Spiders while playing with Big Wheelie and the Hubcaps. His perseverance in keeping the Spiders on top is attributed to Buffalo ’s Music Hall of Fame Member , Allen Thompson. He leads the band, playing guitar and vocals. Gary , having become a master at his unique style of playing guitar, was nominated five years running for “Best Guitarist” at Buffalo ’s Music Awards. Well touring as lead guitarist with the Jimmie Van Zant Band (of the legendary Van Zant family,) Gary has been photographed for five international biker magazines, including Feb. “07” issue of Easy Rider. He not only expanded his musical talents well on the road, but his business savvy. Gary formed a life long friendship while working with Emmy Award Producer Tim Eaton. En Vogue, Greg Allman, and Michael Jackson, are just a few musicians Tim has worked with. In 2007, Gary returned to Buffalo and Jammed with some of Buffalo ’s top musicians. Dave Constantino or “cuz” as Gary calls him, (Due to a distant relation to Tommy Calandra from the internationally touring band, Raven) had just released an original blues CD, Another Bump in the Road. Dave has always been a source of inspiration to Gary , just as his Uncle Tommy has been. Gary began taking more of an interest in the blues style. Willie Haddath from Willie and the Reinhardts, began working with Gary on slide techniques. Mick Hayes, Dave Frost, Joe Dillinger, and Gary decided to jam at Metzgers’ Monday Bike Night. The mix of classic rock and blues seemed to appeal to a more diverse crowd. Realizing these outstanding musicians had their own projects to pursue, Gary kept his eyes and especially his ears open for the perfect mix for the new sound of the Bar King Spiders. He found that unique combination and formed a dynamic four piece band. A versatile musician who blends classic rock and honky tonk blues wasn’t all Gary found when he sat in on a few gigs with the band, Revival, an Allman Brother’s tribute band. Gary met Mojo, a keyboardist with such heart and soul. He will undoubtedly be nominated for the 2008 Buffalo Music Award’s best male blues vocalist. Born Joe Mergler in 1969, Mojo grew up in a musical family and although he was a promising jazz trombonist in high school, he discovered the piano. His musical career as a composer began in the school band room when he wrote a song poking fun at a fellow student. His classmates declared the song a hit, prompting Mojo to team up with fellow classmate John Moore (53 Days) to write and record pop music. He studied music composition at Fredonia, one of the top music schools in the country and continued his education with a business degree from Buffalo State . Mojo stated that music is great, but without business savvy, the best music in the world goes unheard and obscured. After appearing on AM Buffalo, promoting his CD, Open Your Arms, with the Band, Bordello Beat, he participated in selected studio sessions with John Moore (53 Days). Teaming up with bassist Dean Wright, they formed F.I.S.T. (Fanatical Industrial Swing Time) a punk-industrial/jazz fusion project. With guitarist Myron Deputat, they founded “Those Idiots” a group dubbed: “The Dyngus day Darlings of Buffalo ” for their annual rockin’ polka shows. After the band Whiskey Richard, a sax based blues band and Shades of Blue, Mojo moved in other directions. Wanting to head back into the studio, he now records and plays with Thirsty Blues Band, The Feast, Revival, and now keyboardist and lead vocals for the Bar King Spiders. Gary and Mojo immediately clicked when Gary sat in on a few gigs with Revival. After hearing Mojo’s original compositions, Gary couldn’t wait to collaborate and begin recording at Mark’s Custom Recording Studios. Shawn Martin, of “The Feast” & “Revival,” hosts an open mike every Thurs. at the Ellicott Manor. His invitation to jam, led Gary to the Bar King Spiders new bass player, Jason Durys. His style of Funk/Jazz/Rhythm/Blues combination makes Jason one of WNY’s most unique and talented bassists. Jason jammed with the Bar King Spiders in the summer of “07” and became a driving force of the band. A powerful and creative bassist with a passion for original music has kept Jason one of Buffalo ’s best kept secrets. Providing the bass line drive and vocal support to several NY bands and artists such as Dazzo recording artist "Jennifer Heieck", Black Eyed Rosie (Rochester) with Buffalo Hall of Fame drummer (Ron Rocco), RysyngTyde, local drummers John Trehy & Cave Wilson and guitarist Mark Krurnawski from the Filter Kings has contributed to Jason’s talent as a diverse musician. Jason continues playing and working on another project, with a Buffalo based band, “The Feast.” Ironically, Gary was unaware at the time, that Mojo and Jason knew one another let alone were working on that project together. Joe Dillinger, drummer from Mojo Limbo and The Mud Slingers, took the throne and set the tempo on stage to launch this classic rock/roadhouse/honky tonk/foot stomping new style for the Spiders. The Bar King Spiders were eager to begin recording their first original CD, but restructuring a band with musicians committed to other projects led to time restraints for rehearsal. A decision was made to use Doug Ackerman, drummer for The Feast, in the studio. Having three members accustomed to playing together along with similar schedules would prevent any further delays on the CD. It’s uncertain whether Doug or Joe’s pending priorities will allow them to commit to the long haul. Either way, The Bar King Spiders are fortunate to have two highly professional and energetic drummers and appreciate their willingness to adjust their busy schedules to work with the band. The Barking Spiders have been fortunate over the years having had some of the most talented musicians in Buffalo play with the band. Changing circumstances have led the band on a winding road. Dreams, which started with Alan and Gary to record a Bar King Spider’s CD, were stifled. There’s a reason, why things happen to alter ones path. Maybe fate plays a part because there are lessons left to be learned, or hell, it just wasn’t the right time. The journey continues. With the right players in place, the Barking Spiders are on a new path, one that has led them to create that “Buffalo Sound.” The Bar King Spider’s first original CD titled, Let it Rip is nearly complete. Thanks to its sponsors: Tarico Brothers and Diamond Hannah’s Recycling Co. as well as Fred at Mark’s Studios; the CD should be released in early spring 2008. “Web Heads,” as Gary refers to the band’s loyal fan base, will be pleasantly surprised by the CD. After taking time off to record, the band is back on the scene. A preview of songs from the CD such as: Whiskey Richard, Bitch Pit, and Scarlett Pussy, are already a hit at local clubs! The songs are definitely high energy, foot stomping, good old road house style, rock’n blues! “Over the past 18 years,” Gary states, “I’m amazed at the amount of stench this little ol’ band from Buffalo has made locally and nationally. I am proud of the respect that area bands have for one another. I said it before and I’ll keep on saying it, the best musicians in the world are right here in WNY. The Bar King Spiders has and always will, promote local talent! Bark on USA !!” It’s not how far the band will take you; it’s how far you’re willing to push yourself. Only when you believe within yourself and give your own blood, sweat, and tears, will you make your dreams happen. There is no easy free ride. Buffalo is a treasure chest full of talented artists, but the phrase “starving artists” came about for a reason. We all have dreams and for some, that’s exactly what they are! Some set out with good intentions, but find the road too rocky. Out of necessity, they make compromises that they can live with. Then, there are the select few that take “The Road Less Traveled” and although their families may think they had a choice, they know that isn’t true. Their life may be a struggle, but their passion is still alive. I’m pretty sure; you can watch any musician playing on stage and realize who fits in these categories. It always saddens me, when I hear a musician say, “I’m just picking up gigs for the money.” You know they gave up out of frustration and justifiably so. For years they struggled and were left unrewarded having talent not many are blessed with. It’s not how technical you play or how well you know a song, it’s the energy you emit, the soul you feel, and the life you give a song each time you create that sound. It’s rare to find phenomenal musicians who still believe and are motivated by the music. That is why, more than a decade later, people in Buffalo looking for a good time know that the best party around will be wherever the Bar King Spiders are playing.
